The effect of altitude upon various nervous functions.

چکیده
explained by the reduced alkali reserve that is characteristic of the acclimatized state, but must be due to an increased sensitivity of the respiratory centre to carbon dioxide. The above results have some bearing on practical mountaineering. I t is clear that if oxygen equipment is used for mountain climbing, ventilation will be least at any level of work in the unacclimatized man. As soon as acclimatization has occurred, the ‘ fixed ’ hyperventilation will persist even if pure oxygen is inspired and will consequently call for an increased volume of inspirate. Also, the diminished alkali reserve which is a secondary result of the hyperventilation will diminish the C0 2 transport capacity of the blood which then may become the factor limiting climbing rate. However, if an unacclimatized climber went directly from sea level to the top of Everest, he would be in great danger if his oxygen equipment broke down at altitudes above 20000 ft.

Effect of acclimatisation to altitude on learning.
Long-term exposure to high altitude has been reported to impair cognitive functions, possibly resulting in an increased risk of mountain accidents. To assess the modification of cognitive functions during acclimatisation to altitude, 17 climbers were studied at 5350 m a.s.l. by means of a neuropsychological learning test. The results clearly show that by extending the period spent at elevations...

متن کاملNumerical solution of delay differential equations via operational matrices of hybrid of block-pulse functions and Bernstein polynomials
In this paper, we introduce hybrid of block-pulse functions and Bernstein polynomials and derive operational matrices of integration, dual, differentiation, product and delay of these hybrid functions by a general procedure that can be used for other polynomials or orthogonal functions. Then, we utilize them to solve delay differential equations and time-delay system. The method is based upon e...

Abstract Background: Taking into account the resistance of cancer cells to chemical drugs and considering the various reports on the effects of plants from the genus Artemisia for the cure of various ailments and diseases, this investigation was undertaken to compare the cytotoxic effects of different plant organs collected from low and high altitudes. In this study the cytotoxicity of metha...
متن کاملAn Overview of the Effects of Melatonin on Nervous System Diseases
Introduction: Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the pineal gland and plays an important role in regulating the brain functions. This hormone with antioxidant activity supports the body against internal and external damaging factors. Melatonin reduces the production of free radicals by preserving mitochondrial homeostasis, and contributes to ATP synthesis in mitochondria. Reduction of melaton...
